It's Pre-Screen Interview Time!
So you’ve successfully made it through the application stage! Congratulations, and well done! You've probably received the wonderful yummy jobs email, congratulating you and inviting you to the next stage of the interview process, which is the pre-screen interview that yummy jobs conduct!
This pre-screen interview is not something to worry about at all, in this post I will go through where about the interviews are held, the set up of the day and again I’ll give you pointers and information regarding each stage of the pre-screen interview, to which hopefully these points will help you succeed!
*NOTE* Please understand that this is based upon my own personal experience regarding the UK CRP application from January 2017. Please do not take the information I have given here as the gospel truth as everyone’s application process will be slightly different. This blog is an advice blog, not a blog in which all information given should be copied. Your application will be unique to you, I am just here to give you an insight into the application and beyond and to give you hints and tips along the way! Finally the opinions and information expressed in these posts are my own and are not those of Disney or any company associated with the CRP application!
So where is the pre-screen interview?
The pre-screen interview is held in Epping, which is just outside of London, but it is on the central tube line so it makes it super easy to get to!
I would suggest that, if you are travelling from around an hour way that you should stay either in Epping or around a stop on the central line just so you are not rushing around in the morning, with the risk that a train may be cancelled, or road traffic is horrendous!
Get yourself onto a Facebook group if you haven’t already, there will probably be one already set up for the next interview round. Become an active part of the group, more than likely there will be people on the group who have already been through the application process, or who have definitely applied in the past. Use the group to make friends, get to know people and ask people questions, the group isn’t there to scare you off, its there to be a support network. At the end of the day you could all potentially be going out to Walt Disney World together, so get to know each other now! It’ll help you calm any nerves that you may have, and I'd highly recommend asking around in the group when it comes to sharing hotels, or meeting up before your interviews. Just meet and talk to as many people as you can!
There are also plenty of restaurants and coffee shops on Epping High Street, remember this will be an all day event, so you’ll probably go to lunch or grab a coffee with your pre-screen group!
How is the pre-screen day set out?
In the January 2017 pre-screen interview the day was set out as followed (this was taken from the email that Yummy Jobs sent to us)
• 9:15- Registration! On the day please take the following items with you are you’re going to need them!
o A copy of your passport photo page
o A passport style photo so yummy jobs know who they are speaking to
o A copy of your most up to date CV
o And an item that represents your home town (I shall discuss this in more detail later)
• 9:30-10:30- The Cultural Representative Program presentation: This is just a presentation where you will watch short videos regarding the program, Yummy Jobs will also briefly discuss job roles available, the costs, what is involved in the program, and basically just get you really excited for a job that you haven’t got yet!
• 10:30-12:30- The group interview! Don't worry I will be discussing all about this later on in the post
• 1:30-5:30- The individual interviews with a member of the Yummy Jobs team! This is actually a really new thing that Yummy Jobs have only introduced in the past year, hold tight I’ll talk about it later on!
It's time for the group interview!
Firstly, you’ll be allotted an interview time, which is usually an hour long. If you are in the first group interview you will obviously go straight ahead to start your interview, if not you have to come back at your allocated time, so that wait is the perfect time to talk to other people, go grab a coffee and calm your nerves.
The group interview may seem scary, you may be super nervous about it all, but the other people in your interview group will also feel the same, so try not to worry yourself too much about what is going to happen! And don’t think someone has done a pre-screen interview before, or has already done a Disney international program that the have an advantage above you in the interview; simply they don’t, you are all on a level playing field, no one has an advantage, you are going to be fine!
So what happens during the group interview I hear you ask! The interview was spilt up into 3 parts in January 2017:
1. Working in a small group to either create a housing event to teach others about the UK, or to create a presentation to a group of 12 year old American school aged children in order to teach them all about the UK.
Here you are not judged upon the how good your event or presentation you've created is, the Yummy Jobs team are ultimately looking at how well you work as part of a team and how you contribute to the team.
During this don't talk over people, listen to the others in your group, input your opinions and ideas when the time is correct rather than talking over others. They want to see you working as a team so let everyone speak, be polite and be an active speaker, don't sit back and contribute nothing, Yummy Jobs will not like that!
2. Sell an item! Yes it may seem scary, and you will be put on the spot, and don’t worry you will get tongue tied but everyone does. I had to sell a slice of Victoria sponge cake...all I can say is that you need to talk about its qualities, what makes it appealing, why do us Brits love the item you have been given? This item selling challenge seems to be a think on your feet exercise, but don’t worry too much, try to give lots of info about the item, and make your pitch funny if you want to!
3. Discuss your item that you have brought with you that represents your hometown. If you nothing about what makes your hometown special or perhaps what your home town is known for, please Google it! The Yummy Jobs people want to see knowledge and passion!
You only have to speak for a couple of minutes, but it would be a good idea to have a think before you even go to your interview about what the item represents and why it is important.
This is the Cultural Representative Program, the Yummy Jobs staff want to see you being passionate about your hometown and be confident when presenting it, you are potentially going to have to talk to thousands of guests at WDW in which they may want to learn about where you’re from; the team are therefore looking for you to talk in detail, raise facts about the item and your home town, and to ultimately see if people are interested in the small talk you are giving. Just be passionate!
What do you mean there’s also an individual interview?!
Ah yes, so in 2016 Yummy Jobs introduced an individual interview to the pre-screen event to ensure that they are taking the right candidates through to the next stage. Don’t worry yourself about this stage, you have made it through the hardest part of the pre-screen, this individual interview is more like a chat! Everyone’s individual interview was tailored for them, no two interviews were the same, however just some of the questions that I was asked are listed below! But don’t go and rehearse answers to these questions, you might not get these questions when you go!
• What is your motivation for applying for the program?
• Why are you passionate about your hometown?
• What us your preferred job role, and why?
• Tell us about your work history
• Talk about your merchandising experience
• Talk about your food and beverage experience
• What has been your biggest achievement in the workplace?
• Would you be okay moving away from your family and home for an entire year?
• How would you deal with a messy housemate in America?
• What qualities would your manager at work say you possess?
Please think of a question to ask the interviewer at the end of the session, the interviewer will always give you a window of opportunity to ask questions, so ask one! By asking a small question it gives the impression that you have taken plenty of time to research and apply for this program, so it will only bode well for you.
And that’s it! Your pre-screen interview is all done! All you need to do now is shake the interviewer hand, thank them for their time and be on your way back home. Understand there may be a long wait, you’ll soon get to realise that both Yummy Jobs and Disney will like to keep you waiting (there will be a future post on waiting times and how to deal with the wait!)
So all I can say is good luck at your pre-screen interview! Be yourself, be confident, you'll be fine! I hope to see you all again for my next post... THE FINAL INTERVIEW!!!
